Coaches

This is all about summer volunteer coaches…in particular my daughter’s softball coaches…Not sure where to start with this one, but here it goes…

Tonight Taylor had one of her two normally scheduled practices. Not a problem. We even got there early so she could warm up pitching in case they were doing live hitting. Still not a problem. Practice was going pretty well. The girls were pretty focused and making corrections when needed. This is great. They finally practiced live bunting and base running. An area they really lack in. Definitely not a problem. With about 15 minutes left in practice, this is when things went really wrong…

The coaches picked teams (now these girls are new together and learning to work together), but they are now split into two teams. The first game was fine, it was with running and throwing. Okay, no big deal. The second game on the other hand was ridiculous!!!!! In a sense it was like playing dodgeball with 3 live softballs!!! Excuse me, but, What the hell are you thinking?!!!! The “idea” was to work on short hops where the ball lands just in front of you and you scoop it up with your glove, or hard grounders. A girl was “out” when the ball got past them when they should have caught it. Isn’t that why we just hit ground balls to them? I’ll tell you this, it’s a heck of a lot safer having ground balls hit at you instead of this! What ended up happening you ask? Three girls were in tears. Two took shots off their shins and one took one off the arm. What else happened? Hard to imagine, but there was some “ganging up” on players. Not that the girls were trying to be mean, but I know for a fact that’s how one girl ended up feeling. She’s a great player, so others were trying to get her out.

Pretty sure after all the complaints from parent that will come from this, that game, whatever it’s called won’t be played again. The one coach we’ve known since Taylor and his daughter were in preschool together (and in the same class for 6 years). This really isn’t going to be an easy conversation with him, but there’s no way Taylor will be playing that game again…she can sit the bench or whatever, it will be much safer!

(The hardest part of all this, he’s a great guy and a great coach. and really knows the game, but this was crazy!)

My son played basketball for years. His coach was terrific, but every once in a while he would come up with something like this. Yikes!

This game probably sounded great in the coaches mind, but once you see it is not working, you have to stop! Sorry that this was such a bad experience.
